They are even worse than any of the neon ones for false indication, I have one that "measures" 12v and 24v DC and 230v ac, it is not use for anything really, not even as a screwdriver.

First off before I tell all what the problem was I would like to say that I have obviously misjudged this forum, you see I thought it was a place I could get help to solve a problem. I had an issue with my motor about 12 months ago (not a mechanic either) and posted the problem there. Within minutes I got responses highlighting possible faults and I managed to fix the problem myself with the help of a haynes manual.
As I previously stated I am not a complete idiot I am just not educated in the world of domestic electrics so coming to a forum for help seemed the right thing to do obviously not.
The problem did not lie in any of the kitchen sockets which I had changed and I might add wired correctly it lay behind a blanking plate fitted previously in a bedroom where the earth wire had come away from the loop thus leaving me with no earth. No deaths no dramas just a simple screw needed to be re applied. Best £40 I have ever spent. Lesson learnt don't come here for help only for ridicule.

Excellent - but generally working on motors will not kill you - messing about with electricity when you are not sure what you are doing will.

Forgive me but you seemed to idicate that yourself when you said.

Thanks for the replies. I will post the results here (after I have called a plasterer and fixed the me shaped hole in the wall after pocking metal things into socket holes !!!!!

Given your comments you got the best advice available - get an electrician.

Your problem is perhaps much bigger than you think since you don't appear to have resolved the much bigger issue you hightlighted at the beginning.

A couple of days ago I was helping with the cleaning and noticed that the side of the electric cooker was in need of a clean. I pulled it out (the cooker) and could smell what I can only describe as electrical burning. Because Im a complete nump I thought nothing of it !!! and when cleaned I slid the cooker back. Now the cooker and dryer are next to each other and I mean next to, there is just enough space to get them both in. As I was sliding the cooker back I saw in the bottom corner of the cooker at the rear and arc go between the cooker and dryer I shouted something like four foot snake! and immediatey switched the power to both off. There was damage to the casing of both appliances. I thought they must be too close together so removed a bit of skirting and pushed dryer right next to the wall re painted both surfaces with enamel paint and then thought that was it. We have now started to get electric shocks off the microwave (same socket as dryer) and the washing machin is not working from the extension lead which it has been plugged into for ages but, it works when plugged directly into the wall socket.

No, not talking rubbish. No "neon" in that one but its still useless crap and could lead to danger if relied upon.
