Flex Outlet plate confused

Hi,
any help appreciated. i have a new build that has 2 of these plates above the wall mounted kitchen cupboards (right up by ceiling) which i have googled to be flex outlet plates but dont know what that means or if that is even correct.

i opened one and found it wired with yellow / green then 2 x brown and 2 x blue wires like it was part of a system.

i also have a light switch that doesn't do anything elsewhere in the kitchen and was told by the site manager i could add under cupboard lighting using these 'plugs' but i don't see how, nor did he hang around to tell me
can i replace them with a standard plug or does some specific lighting fit up the down facing hole?

anyone fancy enlightening me would be amazing
i'm no expert but OK at DIY and can wire a plug if needed!

He is basically saying you can add under counter LED strips or whatever and run the flex from the light in through the hole and wire it to the flex outlet.

A flex outlet plate is used to connect exposed flexible wiring to fixed wiring. It generally consists of some terminals to make the connection and a cord grip to restrain the flexible cord. Beyond connecting wires together, it doesn't do anything electrically.

I would interpret the site mangers statement to mean that the outlet plates are fed from the lighting circuit and controlled by the currently non-functional light switch.

Assuming that is correct, you would use the terminals on the flex outlet plate to connect the flexible wiring from the light fitting to the fixed wiring.

Generally it is best practice not to mix different types of wire in the same terminal hole. So if your flex outlet plate has two terminal holes per pole, you should use one hole for the solid conductors of the fixed wiring and the other hole for the conductor from your flexible cable.

Putting regular sockets on a lighting circuit is allowed by the regs, but is sometimes frowned upon, because of the possibility that someone may plug in a large load and trip the breaker.

Personally, I would only fit a regular socket on the lighting circuit if I had to do so in order to supply equipment that came with a wall-wart power supply.
