Fuel Duty Downing Street Petition

If the lorry drivers action didnt budge the government nor will this...they are not stupid, they know what an emotive issue fuel is.

This country will never ever grind to a halt because of a fuel strike...they will bring the police heavy mob in, the one who love a bundle for a bit of extra overtime...if that fails...the army.

Apart from that...they know we are stupid enough to keep paying it.

you mean, instead of paying £X on fuel tax, you want to pay £X on income tax instead :?

Where's the benefit?

I'd like to see the price of fuel tripled to get the motors off the road.

Do you think we care what you'd like Joe?

Who is the 'we' that you represent? Are you an official spokesmen? Or have you elected yourself spokesperson for the group you represent? Why are they incapable of representing themselves?

I'm not sure I agree with this, if the strength of public opinion is high enough central Government will listen ... Ultimately at the polling booths

I was in the US last year when they put a couple of cents on the price of a gallon ... You would have thought that WW3 had erupted. There was a nice American fella in the queue in front of me having a real bleat about it as he drives one of those huge mobile homes on wheels with a 7.0L engine ... Then I pointed out how much we pay ... It certainly shut him up

He said quite seriously, though, that no Government would dare tax fuel so heavily in the US because, to do so, would make them unelectable ... Such is the dependance of the US on fuel and the power of the strength of public opinion.

Trouble is over here ... People moan a lot but do nothing about it.

i signed, for all the good it will do, but with all the smoking bans, and people giving up smoking cause of it, the government needs to get their war money from somewhere.

you can pay tax on petrol, or you can pay tax on something else. no prob.

If we had cheap fuel we would probably be as wasteful as the Septics. So having tax on fuel instead of on bread is no bad thing.

How about a fair tax where you are taxed at 80% on all income over and above that which you should reasonably earn but reduce the current threshold's for normal people to 15% and 30%

As an example ...

Sports Stars
Reasonable salary ... £500,000 per annum?
Actual salary ........... £5,000,000 per annum
£500,000 taxed at 30%
£4,500,000 taxed at 80%

They get to keep only £90,000 of the £4,500,000 after tax

In this way we penalise people for being paid far more than they are worth and the difference goes into the treasury thus reducing the tax bills of those who are paid a reasonable salary.

Fuel would be cheaper, drink would be cheaper and the divide between the have's and the have not's would be reduced

Well that's it then. I was just thinking about becoming the worlds first 71 year old sports superstar when you come up with this nonsense. How do you expect me to live on £90,000 a year? For a start there's the tummy tuck, the new teeth, the hair replacement and the transplant. Forget it, I'll stay on as a replacement teacher.

Can someone remind me why I should pay any tax on anything? my kids go to private school, we have private healthcare and our own private pensions (second rented property)
I don't mind road tax, to pay for the roads and council tax to pay for the police and bin men but I don't see why I should pay any income tax or VAT or insurance premium tax, tabaco/alcohol duty...I am a bit drunk maybe thats why I can't remember why I pay all this money to a bunch of sods who I didn't even vote for (we need proportional representation) who steal it for their retirement and use the power they have to **** me off and cause me more trouble. :?:

cheap public transport first, then you can tax fuel high as you like.
we'll pay another way through costlier goods so whats different?

Choice that's what!
