I notice that some gas fitters use PTFE and some don't. What is best practice?

if some dont use PTFE tape what do they use, and of the ones that do i hope they use one wrap PTFE in yellow reel not ordinary thin PTFE tape

It looks like the ones that "don't" use tape rely on compression of olives alone, unless they clean any excess off so it's not visible to naked eye. Not a gasfitter myself, so have never taken a fitting off to see for certain.

Just curious as to whether joints without tape was the norm or not, or if any other compound is used, since I rarely use tape for wet work. As you know, death doesn't really occur from a water leak, but would do so for gas, hence why I don't touch it.

You shouldn't need to rely on anything other than the compression of the olive alone. I discard any brass olives and replace them with copper. I then apply a very thin smear of jointing paste, any more and you could provide a temporary gas tight seal that could fail if the fitting was knocked. On taper threads I just use jointing paste.

likewise ben I always use tape or gas seal paste, I also throw away brass olives and replace wiith copper.
I usually nip up the joint enough for olive to catch then undo, wrap tape round and tighten up. not had a leak for years with this method.
I never use ordinary PTFE - hate the stuff to thin and always gets in a mess!! use gas tape on everything gas or plumbing.

Loctite 55- A giant leap forward for mankind! Beats lumps out of hemp and boss white. A big advantage of this stuff is that you can bring screwed fittings back almost a full turn and it still wont leak. Magic. :D
