A fellow pilot reported him as behaving suspiciously as it was unusual for him to visit the gents at that time. Police investigated and found the bottle. The flight was halted, passengers disembarked, the pilot escorted off, and interviewed. He was immediately suspended. That was before they had evidence that he'd done anything wrong, only a suspicion his movements were unusual. A pilot who gave his hostess a length during a flight would be in prison for some time, guaranteed.
