i dont want to kick up a fuss....and im taking a wild guess...here in usa about 100 yrs ago, an african american (if you know the history of slavery...might giive you a hint) was known raciously as a "pik a ninny"--a terrible word, that became the icon word for the picture of little negro children with lots of braids in their hair....i think it was a "brand" also but dont know for what product....some people collect this type of "folk" art still.
Is this anywhere close to what this is referring too?
depending on what those images were selling it could be taken as derogatory if for instance it depicts a brand of food that only poor people can afford or it depicts the image of someone with little intellect you know the sort of typecasting that used to be prevalent before but now not so accepted as cultures have merged and people see others for what they really are and not a stereotype.

Here he is the lovely little fella.

I had a golly that I took everywhere with me until my neighbours dog ate him  . I also collected golly badges and figures. I still love golly even now.

I'm sorry but I think it's just PC nonsense to ban golly :(

One of our neighbours as a child was an afro-caribbean man married to a white lady and they had 4 kids. As kids we always played together with their kids and I remember him once coming home from a delivery with gollys for all of us as he'd been to the Robertsons factory on his rounds (I think he worked for a sugar company or something but know it was driving lorries). So, if a black man can buy gollies for his kids and neighbours kids then why is it racist????

because some are offended by it.

seriously... does anyone know why it was offensive?
was it the name only?

Well some people are or claim to be offended by anything  .

I don't like Rosie from Rosie and Jim because she's spiteful & it offends me but I don't claim that she's racist!

unfortunately....slavery is in the core of american history....and generations later....whites (like myself) bear the guilt of our fore fathers....there are those who believe whites are supreme and have extreme views on the subject...even today....for that matter, negroes (not politically correct anymore) were not even accepted in general populations even in the mid sixties....it has been a hard road that I can never imagine.....

Now they used to scare the bejeezus out of me! I don't know why but as a kid I was petrified of them!

Golly was just innocent and cuddly with shaggy hair :D

as stated above i personally believe it was the skinheads use of the word that offended so many and having lived through that period i can say it wasn't a pleasant time with regular beatings administered to innocent people as they walked along the streets or having to take extreme abuse from gangs of hooligans for no reason.

Hmmmmm in some places it's still the same now isn't it? Didn't all the black people get left on the roofs of their shantys in New Orleans whilst Bush flew over on his visit?

I recall Tiger Woods saying in an interview once too that he went to play at a golf course somewhere and was asked to get changed in the toilets as the changing rooms were 'whites only'

Absoloutely appalling that people get treated differently because of the colour of their skin - we all bleed the same colour don't we??????

I find that extremely upseting..

It is not a big problem where I live ( and yes.. anyone who isnt cumbrian borna nd bred stands out full stop!!

so why is it a problem elsewhere??

I am not qualified / experienced to answer that.

But in times of strife or any time come to think of it... I would help any person.

I form opinions on the individual, not on their skin colour.

yes.....sadly....descrimination is the biggest problem here. Not only for african americans....but homosexuals (has improved, but still), asians....if you are not blatantly white....then you become the target of horrible jokes...sadly even you --because of your accents---it's absolutely shameful! and it gets passed through to children of bigots.....a never ending circle of hatred and ignorance.

there are those (me for one) who do not think or live that way, sometimes are ridiculed just as much....it won't be in my lifetime...acceptance that is.
