Google/Meta court case

Parents suggest it wasn't their fault. Really, who bought her the gadgets, and allowed her to spend so much time on it?
I agree but this is about the damage done to the young person not the time spent on the social media. I’m not sure the extent of the damage was known at the time.

My “knowing Google” comment is based on litigation experience not casual understanding of the company.

And my comment was not intended to denigrate you, only using your pertinent example as the context for my point.

If the [CEO] knows that the body corporate will carry the can for his decisions, he won't care less if those decisions harm anyone.

There’s got to be a balance between parental and corporate responsibility. If meta are mining young people’s personal information and targeting them for ad revenue they have the same responsibility as food manufacturers who produce highly processed foods.
Quite. Are bakers to be held responsible because some people are overweight, or brewers because some become alcoholics?

Probably not but if food manufacturers develop highly processed sugary foods, they must bear some responsibility. Plus do you withold nhs treatment for alcoholics/heavy drinkers whose habits have greatly increased their prosepcts of serious disease|/

Maybe some regulation is needed. I've read that corn oil is added to manufactured food, as it reduces the "full" feeling, so the companies sell more food and add to the obesity crisis.

At least until they sober up!

There was a US rule under their Comms laws which said that the publisher (ie Meta, or DiyNot if it were in the USA) was responsible for what was carried.
It was repealed - and they were given immunity, by rule "Section 230", shoulda had some half-way.

Yes they need reeling in, but imho not breaking. We are still learning, here.

AI gives details.

Slimming injections that target receptors which govern the hunger response seem to be the way forward.
