Gremlins in the boiler?

I moved into my first home last month. The boiler is driving me nuts! It's an Ideal Logic + 24 Combi. I have a Potterton EP2002 programmer.

The only way I can get hot water is to program the central heating on at the same time. If the boiler and programmer are set to "on", the heating comes on even if the room thermostat is down (although i can hear the thermostat accurately registering the room temperature). In other modes I haven't been able to reliably get hot water. The boiler either doesn't register that hot water is needed or goes straight into pump overrun.

I'm trying to work out what might be wrong - is it the controls that need fixing or the boiler itself? I'm thinking about switching over to Hive. Would this solve the issue or should I just take the hit and get an engineer in?

The hive is just basically a switch although a very complicated one , it will not solve your problem you need that sorted first

I always recommend that anyone buying a property should get the boiler and system serviced and the use of the controls explained.

It does sound as if the boiler does have a fault though.

just re read your post , if you have a potterton EP2002 programmer connected to your new Ideal logic that would be more than daft, I suspect that they are old controls for the boiler that was removed when the combi was fitted I would doubt very much if they are connected to your new boiler

The EP2002 is definitely playing a role in controlling the central heating. The timing for that works more or less fine although it sometimes takes time to shut off.

It doesn't sound like the hot water call leading to pump overrun symptom is ringing a bell with anyone so it sounds like I'll need to call someone out...

If the heating is off and you turn on a hot tap then what does the boiler do?

Either nothing or pump overrun
