How long should these things last. I have 2 sets of spotlights in my kitchen with 4 bulbs in each. These GU10s keep having issues. They normally manifest by either flickering or go a bit dim and when light turned off they stay on for a couple of seconds flicker and go off. It's pretty random. I've checked the light units and connections and they seem fine. The bulbs are these from Screwfix.

If these 'spotlights' have enclosed cans, the LEDs are overheating and will fail quickly regardless of what brand they are.

Try LED GU10 bulbs from a different vendor, definitely not Poundland and see if they are better

Do you have a dimmer or a standard switch

Try a different better quality brand name, keep taking the old failed ones back under guarantee for replacement. Is the light fitting checked out for tight and correct connections.

Light fitting seems fine. All connections made with wago connectors under it.
It's a standard switch.

Then your best bet is to try branded bulbs

Failure is inevitable.

If something uses electronics, it can be damaged due to spikes.

Protection can be built into the device, or it can rely on external protection.

So with cheap LED bulbs it may well rely on the surge protection device built into modern consumer units, and if missing you may find cheap bulbs fail.

But some homes are in an area where there are very few spikes, others are in an area where they are common.

But first question must be have you got a SPD fitted and if so do the warning lights still show it as being OK?

I have cheap poundland smart bulbs £5 each and not had any problems to date, I do have SPD fitted.

On balance I would change the fitting to one that allows the heat to escape, rather than splash out on more expensive led’s that may not work.

In theory, the GUs should dissipate heat from out of the front of the lamp.

It was the GZs that threw heat out the back.

And again, in theory, with LED now, they run a lot cooler.

But, fair point. Best to buy some quality lamps and a decent well-vented fitting.
