18 W fluorescent, just how safe would it be. Could we die? :D

i would of thought a incandescent bulb would be worse as you are more likely to touch the filement, in a florecent although the voltage is higher you would have to touch the metel bit at the very end of the tube, which is less likely.

A shop i once worked at had a low ceiling in the cellar, about 185cm high. Some moron decided to fit standard 5 foot fluorescent strips down there. No guards on them or anything. I had plenty of near misses with them, kept banging my head on one of them. Never smashed one though. Left that to everyone else. Its surprising how much force they will take before they snap. But talk about a H+S issue, where we are wheeling tall cages about, stacked with goods, on an uneven floor.

Thank you all. Just on my mind, was worried about the safety aspect.

And no worries, I wont be going around head butting every tube I see.

That reminds me about an 8ft tube I bought from a wholesaler in 1990. On the way out of the place, I dropped it onto the tarmac. It bounced, and has been doing sterling service ever since in a well-used kitchen!!

Yeah the mercury could cause you some issues!

I had mercury poisoning, and the chelation therapy and general feeling or death warmed up that stuck with me for a while before and after it was diagnosed was enough to make me leave a room pretty quickly when a flouro tube is broken.
