Help Appreciated! Hall/Landing Light, Pics included

The LINK between the two individual switches at the downstairs switch looks like it's in the correct place.

You should observe between the landing switch downstairs, and the landing switch upstairs, there is a red and black, using the 1 way and 2 way terminals. It is not vital which way round they go.

You have that link feeding the common terminal at the switch for the landing downstairs.

And upstairs in the common terminal you have the red that goes to the landing light.

I suspect this is what you have already done. Re-cap over.

In the meantime it may be an idea to re-draw your diagram, and send it in. That way you should understand it better, and we can refer to it when we get you testing the circuit with a multimeter.

Please remember the wiring may be connected to more than one circuit (don't think you confirmed this yet, apologies if you did), so make sure the power is off upstairs and down before working on it.

That's where it gets a bit odd. If it were a standard two way using twin and borrowed live affair, I wouldn't expect there to be a live loop at the upstairs pendant. It doesn't make sense for it to be there.

I can only think the neutral for the landing light has been supplied from another upstairs light (op has indicated bathroom) using a 2 core cable, and rather than cut out the red core, or put in a block each end, it's been connected to the permanent live.

Possibly someone thought the landing light might as well have a permanent live available, maybe for future additions?

thanks EFLImpudence, thats how to do it! think it sums up where we are!

Agree its a bit weird, like i said i will take a pic in attic above landing rose, there are connector blocks up there,

To recap, regarding upstairs, someone said to move the ceiling live in with the other red, when i did that it stayed on permanently!

:)

I think that's a bit of a red herring. It's proved you've got a permanant live there, but doesn't really help us!

If you can post the pics from the loft, and also while you're up there, see if you can see any wires coming into the loft above the switch position, and trace where they go to.

If you can get your hands on a multi meter tomorrow, that would be brilliant. B&Q or screwfix etc should have one for about £15. Don't worry, we'll talk you through what to do with it!

thanks RF, fair enough, just thought id throw it in to mix, does that answer the ? on EFLImpudence drawing for me though? Def Live?
