Hi Peeps - Nice to be here.

Purchased a house built in 1934 about 6 months ago, and we're just starting the long process of renovating it. And that's why i'm here. The electrics are a nightmare.

Anyhow - In the process of re-wiring and have notified the council and had a pre-commencement inspection carried out. All's fine and i'm starting under the Living room floor. I plan to use 2.5mm Twin & earth for the Living room ring main, which will eventually connect to a 32A MCB in the nice shiny new consumer unit I have yet to fit. The inspector said that seeing as I can get under the floor, I can clip the cable to the joists without needing to use conduit, which is great. What I'm unsure of though is whether I can cross joists with clipped cable or just run along their length. Most info I read so far suggests I have to drill the joists at least 50mm below the floor level to cross them - is this the only way?

Thanks in advance!

No you can run metal earthed conduit at any depth but it is a b***h to work with.

Thanks for the reply :)

What I'm really asking though is whether I can cross joists with clipped cable or just run along their length - That's the bit i'm unsure about.

Nothing to stop you clipping across the joints as long as the spacing is whithin regs and it is unlikely the span between joists would exceed the limits.
Have fun!

Just a buliding notice. I delivered the application in person to the Building control offices, and whilst I was there, the buildings inspector came and talked through the process with me. He said that they offered a pre-commencement inspection if I wanted it, and I took him up on the offer on the basis that whilst I'm reasonably comfortable and competent with spark work, a lot of the new regulations, especically this Part 'P' stuff is new to me.
