Hotpoint VTD00 tumble dryer stopping in cycle

You didn't trace the wiring from the relay before buying the timer!

Sorry for the dallying in replying; no I used another timer not bought one, dismantled original and cleaned and reassembled, but the same result. Will try to borrow/obtain another motor to test that, though it worked in a way, but not totally convinced.
 
I thought the testing on the motor was conclusive and eliminated from diagnosing the fault. If it worked everytime alternating between the 2 lives (10-20 times should do it) then the motor should be fine.

You changed the cap so we know thats ok.
 
Yep, I tried another relay, no difference. Still trying.

Any worn insulation on the wiring?

You could check for shorts between the wiring.
