There's a clip of a well known investments guy on Bloomberg being asked what his advice is if people ask him 'I have $100k to invest, what should I do with it?' and his answer is 'most of the time I just say buy the index.'

His point being, unless you want to take a more proactive role in your investments, just set it and forget it by buying an index fund, cause over the years these trend upwards and you're not involved in the management/planning of.

possibly one of my best was in a gold /minerals company that eventually closed due to fraud and lies bought at 3.5p sold at 42p their high was 46p made a tasty profit on that one

Yes, seen it many times. Note that in the last 12 months you would have made 0% on the index he suggests. That's not rare, In 2022 it was minus 18%, and trivially simple to do better on energy that year, which iirc was +63%. SO youda lost half a dozen years in one go. Terrible.
