How hard can it be to install an inline relay?

So just to clarify, a completely separate wire simply goes from Relay L to Relay COM?
That's correct. The reason they're not linked internally is so that it could be used to switch things independent of your mains. For example you might be switching 12V equipment, but the relay would still need it's L and N connected to mains in order to power it's electronics.

BTW - Have you read and understood the warning on page 2 ? The one that says the unit MUST be installed in an enclosure.

That means it's not OK to just stick the unit on a wall with it's terminals exposed.
