I'm not keen on it myself, but everyone says its the safest form of transport, but is it??

I saw most of the Tenerife disaster programme last night, it really is a case of your life in someone elses hands :?

According to this website its on a par with driving, only at 35,000 feet.

I think yes it is. It just sounds bad because once a year or less often a lot of people die at the same time. But more people die each year on UK roads but we don't put them together as a single accident.

No more so than being in the hands of the drunk driver coming towards you or the impatient idiot 10 feet behind you at 70 MPH

I tend to disagree Bernard, this captain was rude, impatient, arrogant and ignored protocol. According to the programme and reports he decided to take off without proper clearance.

He was responsible for over 300 lives, not many pileups have caused that much death in one go.

A drunk driver is breaking the law and social taboos getting behind the wheel, his judgement is impaired as is his decision making skills, he is only responsible for those in his car (other road users are not his consideration).

The stats say that there are 1.3 deaths per 100 million miles driving and 1.9 deaths per 100 million miles flying.

don't even ask about motorbike, I'm thinking of selling mine :?

'Mmmmmm.

"...The decline in the casualty rate, which takes into account the volume of traffic on the roads, has been much steeper. In 1964 there were 240 casualties per 100 million vehicle kilometres. By 2005 this had declined to 55 per 100 million vehicle kilometres."

"The United Kingdom has a very good record for road safety compared with most other EU countries. In 2004 it had one of the lowest road death rates in the EU, at 5.6 per 100,000 population. The UK rate was also lower than the rates for other industrialised nations such as Japan (6.96 per 100,000 population), and substantially lower than that of Australia (8.15) and the United States (14.66)."

You can look for the air deaths yourself

I believe the highest death rate are anything to do with sea water, fisherman, boating, cruises etc.

I can't remembered where I first read it sometime ago, someone may correct me on this

My wife flies several times a week working as cabin crew. don't know about the statistics but, on many occasion she has come home with tales of close calls, some on the ground, some in the air and some coming in to land. She can often relate the tales of pilots of whom are the ones who see and here more.

Seems flying is safe, as long as your not involved in an accident

The trouble with incidents involving aircraft is the number of souls involved at ant one time. Vehicular accidents only make news if many numbers or fame/notariorty involved.

Flying will never kill you, its the plummeting vertically towards the ground in an out of control plane and slamming into the earth that'll kill you!
