I drive 1000 miles at 60 mph average (some hopes !), in 'danger zone' for 16.67 hrs, with other contraptions at varying velocities, both with and against, all within feet if not inches, continually under manual control using pretty loosely interpreted rules, both of the road, and vehicle condition etc.
I fly 1000 miles at 500 mph, in 'danger zone' a mere 2 hrs (that's an 8:1 ratio already )... two drivers plus upmteen aids, strict separation distances and maintenance procedures... Pretty much a gently curved, but reasonably straight course, rarely seeing other craft... with extra guidance when changing height, course etc.
How dangerous would, or better, 'should', one expect this to be?
I reckon there is a case that we do quite well on the roads - considering. It goes without saying, never well enough whilst there are injuries sustained.
Mind you, a modern car is far safer than 50 yrs ago ... A passenger plane will generally kill you, the passenger, and any bugger under it, if it falls from the sky, as it would have done 50 yrs ago.

There's an interesting stat that very high percentage of people involved in plane crashes survive. Obviously not the ones where they fly staight into a mountain or the sea. But most aircraft accidents are not of this type and most passengers survive.
