Had it been a solid floor you'd still have needed to get below it. Steel columns would normally go down to foundation, or a concrete pad, or sometimes they can sit on the existing sub-floor blocks. But you wouldn't sit them on the floor.

Me personally I'd have run that idea past BCO before digging holes and filling them in....welding- did you do it? Are you coded for that sort of work?
