I have a bog standard gas fire in a quite large v.old fire place;

Had passed it's corgi cert for the last 6 years, failed this time as the "void" front area is filled with a horse shoe shape of masterclad,which is OK, but the 2x2 baton frame that supports its is wrong as in theory it could dry up and cinder, i've talked to a few people who all say different things.

1. Clad the wood in masterclad, seal with heat proof silicone.
2. Cover wood in heat proof felt!
3. Brick in both sides to "flaunce", with a new mantel
4. Use metal brackets and a hammer drill to screw into breast.

Any more ideas welcome!!! :? :?

It sounds as if you are a Landlord and you are talking about a property which you rent out!

I hope you are concerned about the safety of your tenants and will do whatever is necessary to make it safe.

I assume this is a standard register grate.

I think the latest IUSP guidebook lists combustable materials (eg wood) within the builders opening as just NCS.

However I would still use judgement and if there is any chance the wood could combust or effect the safety of the fire I would cap the gas.

(Guidebook in van and can't be a***d to get it)

Yes with no evidence of burning has always been ncs.

I'm not sure I can picture the thing but would it tile?

Gasguru, what is a kiltie doing in the Big Smoke?
