If you wrote the regs, what would you do/change?

Evening

Myself I would keep the RCD rule for all general use sockets and showers etc but would scrap the RCD 50mm rule (since I think it is one thing going a bit over the top) and the new alterations and extensions rule.

I was just wondering what new regulations would everyone make/existing regulations you would remove etc if you were in charge of making regs?

Regards

I think the wider use of RCDs is a good idea.

Given a little more time cost will not be an issue, and it will become the norm. It can only help make installations safer.

The only change I would make is to clarify some regs which are currently open to (mis)interpratation, such as the earthing arrangements for circuits with high protective conductor currents.

similar to RF

my pet hate of the new regs is - cross bonding no longer required and a reliance on RCD instead. personally I think we should still have bonding even with 30Ma RCD's (RCD's are known to fail)

I'd get the eggheads together in a big roo to work out what they want, then get a Joe Bloggs to actually write it down in clear plain English so that there can be no misinterpretation....

too many things are vague and people read into them what they want to..

"Pshhht..... hey look worms.... "
take the high integrity earth debate that raged round here for ages..

I read the regs as a ring final complies as long as you use dual earth sockets, because the socket is still earthed even if one of the cpc's breaks off or the screw comes loose.. a position backed up by the OCG which says the same and even has pictures to prove it...

another thing that should NEVER have been changed was black wires (nuetral) now being used as lives as in 3 core + earth and why grey for neutral? all the bull about harmonisation. with what? the french use orange cables and the rest of the world do whatever they like
was in Ghana a year or ago and there its normal to use anything that will carry electric!

you don't have to use grey for the neutral if you don't want to..

there's no set colour code to say what cores are used for what when wiring using 3c+e.. as long as you sleve the cores the right colour for their function..

RCD's are known to fail

Quite true. However, for years they have been used to protect TT supplies with very high EFLI's.

If they fail in that scenario, that also leaves the installation dangerous.

You can't guard against failure of this type.
