I think a lot of the history is lost forever, like the concept of cart buying...Surely people didn't build their own carts, so there must have been a cart showroom to buy carts?

The romans made great use of water clocks...

Yes, that reminded me of the time I was younger before I could afford an alarm clock. I would drink at bed time 2 pints of water.This would get me up for 5 o'clock to do the paper round. 1 pint for 6 o'clock. May be this also worked for people 100 years ago.
