Immigration and the tories

Oh dear! put that handbag away,
I wasn't having a go at you or your Granddad I was simply interested in what his feelings would be about your choice of politics, how come your so touchy you've done your share of slinging insults in my direction and I've taken it as friendly banter.

I had been responding to your post where you had accused various tories of being "traitors" to their socialist grandfathers.

Now, if you had said "Do you think he would mind if he knew you were a Tory?" then that is exactly how your post would have been read. But the tone of "Wot do you think he would think of you?" is very different. Say them both out loud. Compare the different tones of each sentence.

And it's not a handbag, it's a sachel. :p

there,s a little word I'm looking for, wot is it.

Tact

no Adam I was plainly speaking of Mr Portillo and Howard esq but thats not to say that you aren't as important as them I just assumed you'd know I was refereing to those two gentlemen

With regards to M Howard:

This is the sort of person we should trust with our country!! I think not, a traiter to his grandfather like Portillo was another traiter to his father's memory as a Spanish socialist who had fled Franco.

To which I said something to the effect of "it makes no sense to say that just because someone doesn't share the political beliefs of their ancestors, that they are a traitor to their fathers' memory. My grandad was a socialist." To which you said "What would he think of you?". Now, here is where the trouble lay.

To you it may read as just that, a simple question. But to me, your phrasing offered a subtext along the lines of "Your poor socialist grandad must be rolling in his grave."

Perhaps it wasn't intentional, English is a complex language and is spoken in very different ways in different parts of the country. But surely you can see where I might have taken offence?

I still don't see how "Adam " fits into the equation as you've shown no obvious interest in running the country and your names not Portillo ?

One thing that's interesting about Adam and Richard is that their parents were exact opposites in political beliefs to their offspring.
I wonder if years of having it drummed into you puts you off following their beliefs?
Or just the young rebelling against the old?
Interesting one that!

I'm not really a natural born Labour supporter but I believe in common decency and that's the only effective party that comes close to it, the experiences that I've had of conservatism are of selfishness, unkindness, hate, slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails, even the nastiest posts in this forum are from the Tory supporters (ok I've lost it a couple of times but mainly I've left things settle when I,ve been slagged off so, s I don't blurt out hurtful expletives like:" For chrissakes Richard, pi** off you boring little man!" i really don't wont to hurt anyone's feelings but some posts are really virtual bullying and yet for all we know the writer might be a little twerp that couldn't punch he way out of a paper bag.

many a true word said in jest Richard, i reckon you are bang smack on there :)

You are obsessed with that one post I made. If you recall, it was in response to your incessant bringing of politics into a non-political thread. As this thread has shown, politics brings out a lot of passion in a lot of people, yourself and myself included. So in the interests of keeping the rest of the forum good-natured it is best to keep politics out of non-political threads.

And what has physical violence towards paper bags got to do with anything?

doesn't mention whether the paper bag is wet or not? could make a difference :)

And are we talking about the light-gauge white paper bags you get (or used to get) sweets in, or are we talking heavy-gauge greengrocers' brown paper bags? ;)
