3. Electricity.
a. the glass housing, in which a partial vacuum has been established, that contains the filament of an incandescent electric lamp.
b. an incandescent or fluorescent electric lamp.

From http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lamp:

lamp

noun
1. an artificial source of visible illumination

Hi,

I stand (sit) corrected.

My college teacher would not accept the 'b' word.

I know - they're a funny lot.

The thing is, in a way dictionaries are irrelevant, because they merely document the language of the moment. If everyone calls them bulbs, then they're called bulbs.

A similar word anomoly exists in plumbing - everyone calls a cistern (in the loft) a tank, even though it isn't one, but wad'ya gonna do?

The bog - invented by Mr Thomas Crapper himself. Lived in Doncaster too

Where is my QI klaxon?

The flushing lavatory was invented in China hundreds of years ago.

Added to that, Thomas Crapper didnt even re-invent it, he meerly sold very fancy ones to very weathly people.

Saying that, the composting toilet was invented in this country and hasnt changed at all.
