And why is it always too short?

Because in Korea where they make the irons they have shorter legs so the flex goes further 
The only possible explanation can be because it's not long enough.

And thus smaller shirts and trousers. I like Asia, I can get 28" inside leg of the peg!
Because silicone flex is too easily damaged. You can pick lumps out of the insulation with your fingernail if you wanted.
