Just to add a postscript to the locked discussion, my Dad sent me this:

One of my first lessons in Bangkok (1959) started like this:

Good morning, class.

CLASS: Good morning teacher.

You haven't had an English teacher before, have you?

CLASS: Yes.

Oh, you have? But you haven't had a teacher from England, have you?

CLASS: Yes!

You've had a teacher from England?

CLASS: No.

In Thai, and probably other languages too, negative questions are agreed with rather than answered. Don't know if that just muddies your waters, matey. If so, sorry.

...but we don't. :)

I thought after it was locked - not for the grammatical bits - that:

Someone says "Is it not raining?" same as "Isn't it raining?"

Whatever you think the answer should be, what about:

1 says "It's not raining".

2 says "Isn't it?" or "Is it not?"

1 responds " ? ".

Tony Hancock and the radio ham. "It is raining not" best of it I have met so many radio hams who actually do what he depicted. Who ever wrote it must have been or known a radio ham.

Anyway can you arrange for the bread and butter pudding. And sorry my pencil has broken the yachtsman can't be saved.

I also remember trying to learn Java Script. 2 + 2 = 22, value of 2 plus value of 2 = 4. And dotted decimal is really odd, once you look at it as binary numbers it makes sense but for 0.0.0.254 plus 0.0.0.2 to equal 0.0.1.0 seems wrong some how.

But English language and maths are closely linked, so -1 x -1 = 1 in the same way "Is it not not raining" means "Is it raining" just simple maths.

Yes, but we're talking about "Is it not raining?" - If it is not raining what would your answer be?

seems like you didn't get it.
'

If you answer it "yes" that means you did not get it.

If you answer it "No" that means you got it.

Do you get it now?

i ( or j ) the impossible used to prove the impossible is possible

OK it is all explained here....... https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/imaginary-numbers.html

I need a game of four dimensional chess to calm my bra√-1n

3D chess is played on a stack of 8 transparent chess boards
4D chess is played on 8 stacks of 8 boards
5D chess is played on 64 ( 8 by 8 ) stacks ( at least it would be if anyone was mad enough to attempt it )
