Just to add a postscript to the locked discussion, my Dad sent me this:
One of my first lessons in Bangkok (1959) started like this:
Good morning, class.
CLASS: Good morning teacher.
You haven't had an English teacher before, have you?
CLASS: Yes.
Oh, you have? But you haven't had a teacher from England, have you?
CLASS: Yes!
You've had a teacher from England?
CLASS: No.
In Thai, and probably other languages too, negative questions are agreed with rather than answered. Don't know if that just muddies your waters, matey. If so, sorry.
