joinery

a hip rafter is the diagonal member at the extremes of a hipped roof onto which the 'jack' rafters are joined.

it is not described as a 'common' rafter because it's angles differ greatly from the 'common' or 'jack' rafters.

it differs, because it has further to travel.

its rise from the wall plate to the ridge is the same as the common rafters, but it has further to travel, horizontally.
