Joist packing

I have to fit timber joists into the webbing of steel UB joists. The span of the joists varies due to stair openings etc and the designer has specified different sized joists for the different spans.

What type of material should I use to pack out the bottom of the smaller joists in the steel web? I assume it should be non-compressable.

I know one way is to buy all joists the same depth but this is an un-neccesary expense when the smaller joists will do the job just as effectively.

... And what should I use to pack the top of an existing floor to bring it up to the same level as the new floor (approx 50mm difference).

Timber bearers coachscrewed to the bottom flange will suffice.

50x50sw battens for the second question.

So that will save about £3.50 in materials, and cost £80 in time messing about in packing them up?

That's a curious way of "designing" - presumably it does not matter that the ceiling and floor levels will differ then when using different depth joists?

Yes slave to the numbers with no thought to practicality. Bet it was RICS with a set of TRADA load/span tables
