Just seen on BBC website - muslim extremist linked to 7/7 - gets 7 1/2 years in jail.

Polish cleaner murders an old lady and spends her savings - gets 20 years in jail.

Is this right - it certainly doesn't seem so to me!!

I agree. The cleaner should have got 25 years.

I've given up trying to understand the British justice ( that's a contradiction in terms as it is ! ) system.

It ain't right. They both should have hung.

Although the system has its faults, its the Judges who are so out of touch which is the problem.

The other thing is the millions of new laws and regulations rushed through by Labour in the last few years, without any thought or consideration of what they all mean or are supposed to acheive

IMHO the judiciary is the crowning glory of the entire system. Are you implying that they have a completely free choice when sentencing?

I find it unlikely that new laws are passed "without any thought or consideration", when you consider how laws are made.

I'm sure that many laws are passed with great care and consideration Softus ... Care and consideration to make sure that they meet the Governments own ends and hide their true intentions from the public.

9/11 and 7/7 were gifts to this Government as all manner of laws and sanctions have been/will be passed on the quiet in the "interests of public safety".

Just returned from a brief holiday in Tenerife which is now another country to add to my list of better places to live than here, not because of the place we live (which is still top of my fave list) but because of the way this country is being governed ... Very sad.

Not a speed camera or CCTV camera in sight for a whole week, plenty of police patrolling on foot and in cars/motor cycles ... No trouble as a result ... No chips on wheelie bins or bin men refusing to take garbage because its not in the correct container, no litter, no bus lanes or single occupancy lanes and traffic moving freely without clowns sitting in front at the speed limit and refusing to budge ... So typical of most other places nowadays ... What is happening to this country?

Many Judges are out of touch, and the frequent news items or just putting "judge lets off ...." into google will throw up many sentencing/acquittal decisions which defy common sense. Yes sometimes there are sentencing restrictions, but most times its the judges decisions which are questionalble

The current government is one of, if not the most legislative governments ever. They have meddled in all areas of society and tried to bring in laws to control problems which don't exist, or problems which don't have a solution in legislature - mainly social issues.

All this new legislation has just created more bureaucracy and confusion into the system, so that its difficult to understand what law is what and therefore to make justice harder to prevail.

Then we have the knee-jerk terrorism laws which are used to remove old men heckling at labour conferences, or extraditing people for fraud offences.

This government sees legislation as the answer to all our problems, and it is creating a powerbase for the state to use against the people as it sees fit (Police state), or it means that justice is only available to those who can afford it - and bend it to suit their own objectives (big business)

I do agree that the principles which made this country such a great place to live (and which were protected by many of our ancestors lives) are being ripped apart by this Government.

I agree with Tim in part that our people have become apathetic though I'd also so say that many are too stupid to realise what is happening IMO.

We are moving perilously close to a police state and my grandfather would turn in his grave if he could see this country today.

I won't be living here in a few years time so its not my problem but I do feel sorry for the next generation as this will be a very different place in 20 years time unless something is done soon.

Countering my expectation of many stories of farting judges, the first two are reports from The Sun 'newspaper', and I was so bored by the many more huge wadges of hearsay that I couldn't reach the third page of Google results, which no doubt contains the reams of cases that you're referring to.

Maybe you could save me the effort and list just two judges whose non-custodial sentences you believe to have been grossly wrong.

Yes sometimes there are sentencing restrictions, but most times its the judges decisions which are questionalble
Saying that a decision is questionable doens't make it so. You need an understanding of the decision and some grounds for believing it to be wrong. I hereby accuse you of having neither.

Do you have an example of just one such law or act of meddling?

All this new legislation has just created more bureaucracy and confusion into the system, so that its difficult to understand what law is what and therefore to make justice harder to prevail.
What in the blue blazes are you on about? Which laws do you find indistiguishable from each other?

Then we have the knee-jerk terrorism laws which are used to remove old men heckling at labour conferences, or extraditing people for fraud offences.
And then we have the knee-jerk use of the term "knee-jerk", rolled out whenever a new law is passed to counter some new-age act of social depravity.

This government sees legislation as the answer to all our problems, and it is creating a powerbase for the state to use against the people as it sees fit (Police state), or it means that justice is only available to those who can afford it - and bend it to suit their own objectives (big business)
I wish I'd read this last parapraph first, because the terms "the state", "the people", "Police state", "powerbase", "big business", betray a child-like perception of how the country is governed, and I really needn't have bothered to write a response at all.

But I love the multiple quoting style of all your posts and look forward to the inevitable disparaging comments in the final paragraph
