Open a command prompt and ping google.com for example. What reply do you get?

Repeat, but use an ipaddress (ping 173.194.34.132 for example). What reply do you get?

From the same command prompt, type ipconfig /all. Post the results for the wireless connection.

Ping failed, haing trouble posting ipconfig results, copied and saved to 'notes' but when I transfer via usb stick the content is lost?

When did the problem start and was this the original problem or is there a bit more history?

Wireless in Vista can be troublesome but if it has worked before then we can get it working again!

Open up your dos, run cmd, and if you can't highlight the text right click on the dos tab bar at the top. You will see a quick edit selection on the right, click it and save.

Go back to run cmd and run ipconfig/all
Highlight the results, click Ctrl and hold it while clicking c, then you paste into the forum text box and post.

As I understand it laptop had a virus which was removed and new anti-virus software added, not connected since.

Have you checked the proxy settings? If these have been changed you would be able to connect to router but no internet access.

After a bit of hair pulling found info to discard and renew ipconfig which after a restart has resolved problem [crossed fingers]. :)

It's also worth remembering that the output from the command line can be sent to a text file. In the example above, at the command prompt key in

IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\IPCFG.TXT

This will create a text file called IPCFG in the root directory of the C: drive which can then be copied to removable media or sent by e-mail as an attachment.
