I am putting down new floors in a downstairs WC (tile) and adjoining hallway (12mm laminate).

I was looking at transitions between the two and was really hoping to achieve a really minimalist finish like the attached pic

Is this possible with laminate flooring that is essentially 'floating' on foam underlay? Neither of the images attached have an expansion gap. Does that mean this finish is only possibly with a non-floating floor?

You need an expansion gap, have a look at the stairrodsuk website as they are producing some very nice finishes nowadays that would give you a moden and clean finish, not as minimilist as your images though.
