This just gets better… so I turned the mains off, disconnected the wires from the chocolate-block type connector on top of the transformer, and tested for continuity between the different terminals on that block.

The reason I did this was because, although the blue (presumably neutral) wire coming in was connected opposite the blue in the flex going to the ceiling rose, as you would expect, if you look you can see that the brown & red aren’t opposite each other…

Now there’s the bit I REALLY don’t understand. There seems to be continuity between all 6 connectors within the red circle… my meter gives 0Ω between any 2 contacts amongst those 6. I thought and thought and thought about that for ages, couldn’t come up with an answer as to how the light could work if the live and neutral were connected together, but couldn’t. I mean, obviously it can’t – simple as that. So I don't know how you explain the meter readings.

After a long time, I simply removed the transformer, connected brown to red, blue to blue, and earth to earth, went downstairs and switched the light on, and it all works as it should.

So I shrugged and decided not to worry about how it all worked. Very odd.

What does it say under that brown wire (where the 'glare' is) - is it "110V" or something like that? If so, it looks as if it is probably an auto-transformer, being used to reduce the supply voltage (230V-240V) to 110V (or whatever).

The transformer winding DC resistances will measure close to 0 ohms; the AC impedance will be almost entirely inductive reactance.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for explaining that :D

Just glad to have got rid of the poxy thing, as it wasn't in use... either that or the living room light was somehow managing to run off 100V :confused:
