Hey everyone,

Have posted this on another website forum so sorry to anyone who may have read this already!

Just received the quote from my local plumber for the replacement of a lead pipe from the house to the main. Can you pass your opinions on whether this is fair or too much? I was allocating less than half of this...oh dear!

30 meters of 25mm MDPE pipe, connections, all excavations and making good the ground. All materials and labour for this price - £1950 + vat (£2340).

The pipe is going to two taps so two connections at the house but thats it. The lead pipework in the house will be done under a separate job so not part of the quote. Not a lot of tradesmen near where I live and want to use a trusted one but not if I'm being ripped off!

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on the ground conditions etc. What has to excavated & backfilled, type of soil & finish. I mean if they're digging & reinstating a tamac drive or monoblocks, then it's not going to be cheap.

The materials will be fairly cheap, so it's down to Labour/Machine hire etc.
And 30M is quite some distance.

I've seen it in the past, where for some reason or another, we've have resorted to using a Pipe Mole.

Had this done at my last house, dug the trench myself and filled in after. Nowhere near that quote.

The digging is through garden soil, will lose a few plants. Some paving to the rear of the house will have to be lifted and replaced but they are big slabs and not laid very well so should be easy to prize up with suitable tools.

What is happening is the plumber is subcontracting the digging to some guy who does that for a living, I would assume that it will have to be done by hand due to the location of the pipe. Our plumber is £25 ph, I would guess the digger guy is the same.

Hmmmmmmmmm.............In that case it does look a bit steep, but hey it maybe the Groundsman that's bumped up the price, who knows?? In most cases you can get a mini excavator in. But again it depends on the location & terrain. The Plumber is certainly not too expensive at £25/hour??!!!

Check with the water supplier, they may have a free or subsidized lead replacement program.

Get your own ground worker and cut out the middlemen making a bob or two for nothing
