Hi I have basic experience with electrics. I have changed many bog standard ceiling roses, sockets, adding sockets to a ring but I have recently received a couple of light fittings (with 3 bulbs on each). I took the old fitting down and forgot the most obvious thing to mark the wires/take a photo to remind me where each one went so now I'm stuck as I have connected the wires and now none of the downstairs lights work, I have a test meter and I know I've obviously just got a wire mixed up (either the switch, supply or the feed to next light) how do I sort this out please?
Thankyou in advance

was there a ceiling rose before you started? Did it just have three conductors going into it? Or do you mean three cables, each with three conductors?

Photos would help.

Sorry its black and red, and yes just a bog standard ceiling rose and I'll upload a photo nke

first thing would be to use the testmeter and establish what cable goes to the switch, with the power OFF

I have my test meter to hand, the switch is off should I keep the fuse box off to establish which is the switch wire

Keep the fuse box off, and on continuity, test between a pair of red and blacks. Get a helper to operate the switch, once you get continuity with the switch on and don't with it off, that's your switch wire

Yes, just test to determine which cable's red and black have continuity when the switch is on, but not when off.

Which setting do I need to use

Oh blimey, its the Ohms setting.

On yours its marked with a Ω

Edit.

Leave the top slide switch where it is

The range switch, turn it round to the position marked 2kΩ

Put your leads in the meter and short them out first to check you get a reading of around 0Ω
