Hi new member,

Just moved into a new flat and all the light switches are large square rockers,the switch has a green light surround that come on when the light is switched off, is this surround light wired separately or is it built into the switch

are you sure it is not Luminous?

take the switch off (turn mains off FIRST) and you will find out

Its a guide when the light is off so you can find the switch, mainly when you have a bit to much drink me thinks.........

Its connected into the switch Live / Switch Live.........Hmmmm no neutral.....it gets from the filament through the lamp..me thinks...you can get them is assorted colours.....lovely

If il78's right it will go out when you switch the light on, and it will also go out if you remove the bulb - have you tried that?

Neons connected across the switch. When the light is off, the switch live returns a "neutral" through the lamp, and lights up the neon.
