I have heard of the T5 low energy strip lights.

Are there any comparible compact flourescents that are low energy too?

Are the T5's stip lights only?

All fluorescent lighting is low energy.

There are some newer fittings available with high frequency ballasts, and a thinner than normal tube, which is even more energy efficient. Is that what you mean?

T5 just means the diameter of the glass tube
T5 is 5/8ths of an inch
T8 is 8/8ths of an inch or one inch

Wow, that's what like about this board. That should be obvious but you have to know it to know it..... (if you know what I mean).

I always thought that T5, T8 etc was some sort of European standard. Who'd have thought that it was in INCHES??

Dont forget the old T12
12/8ths of an inch =0ne and a half inches

you now have a T4 in production as well.

The smaller the tubes are getting the better the gas inside.
most T5 are 8 gas (840) for example, they are Triphosphor gas, also used in most cfl lamps.
newer stuff is starting to use 9 gas this is multiphosphor gas and even better.

I wish it was a standard. Get T4 10W lamps from two different manufacturers and chances are they will be different lengths!

It does seem to vary but in general T4 are the most efficient, both in terms of light per watt but remember that they are smaller. So if you want to fill a big area then you can end up using lots of T4 lamps and using more energy than you had planned.
