Just about to go for a new combi (WB Greenstart 28i), and a Magnaclean filter suggested.

Seems like a good idea until I see others saying the Sentinel is better.

I have my own thoughts on the longer term problems with the Magna Clean so wanted to find out what the reasons would be for the Sentinel being better.

It looks like the Sentinel will be more reliable in the long run, plus it traps all the crud not just magnetic.

So any expert opinions will be welcome.

The 28i is the cheapest and most basic boiler made by WB. (hot water temp is basically controlled from the tap)
The i and Si are literally chucked together in the UK,using cheap foreign parts.

If we were still daft enough to supply WB then the least we would recommend the Si or better still the CDi.

The new WB are nowhere as reliable as the older models.
The advantage they have is their backup, the amount of service vehicle they have says it all.

There are better quality and cheaper boilers available.

So from what your saying if it's WB then it should be a 27CDi, to get the better build.

The only thing DHW used for is a shower. I have current combi (ancient half working Halstead Quattro) which has it's clock overridden by Honeywell control for heating rads and a circuit for Hot Water tank (which feeds two baths, two basins, and kitchen sink with lots of lovely hot water at the drop of a hat).

So the view seems to be I need something that gives me about 10 litre per minute Hot Water and no more than 24KW or the Rads, and the timing controls will just be from current Honeywell (which controls motorised valves so we can heat the hot water tank without having the rads warming up)

So I guess of of the chaps that have come around see the most basic combi as my need.

If I was in your neck of the woods (given the water is much harder here) what would you be selling me?

The fernox TF1 is by far the best thing i have fitted so far

The revolutionary Fernox Total Filter TF1 is a unique hydrocyclonic and magnetic in-line filter that removes and contains magnetic and non-magnetic contaminants from central heating systems. Easy to install with no additional parts needed, the Total Filter TF1 has also been designed as a dosing point for the Fernox 'F' range of chemical water treatment products to ensure the system's long lasting performance.

I used to fit Boiler buddies, and then moved on to the Magnacleans, my oldest Boiler buddy is now about 5 years old and the plastic is not holding up well, I expect to be replacing it next service... The Magnacleans are better but do suffer from dodgy valves and other problems... I have started using The Spirovent Magnabooster which should not have the same problems that the plastic products have

The TF1 looks like its better built than the magnaclean but only time will tell

Magnaclean all the way, they've sorted the leaky valve issue now as far as I can tell, and they're very easy to service. Fernox TF1s seem messier to clean and despite what Fernox might want you to believe, they don't clean out properly using the bottom valve either, do a 'flush' then dismantle one and look at how much carp is left. With the Magnaclean you get a positive clean, IE you can see it's clean because you've taken it apart and done it yourself. I've had no issues of any sort with Magnacleans since they improved the valves.

The TF1 also seems to be smaller, not necessarily a good thing

Spirovent every time. Time proven, simple, takes out ferrous and non ferrous.

Magnacleans are just total carp, rubbish build, rubbish service. Less reliable than any boiler I can think of. Bit ironic fitting a product to protect a boiler, and that gives the most grief.

Biggest enemy of a magnaclean is not sludge, it is water. They are incompatible with it.

I notice that BG have stopped fitting them as standard in S London, have they seen the light? I was rather hoping they'd blindly go on fitting more, because while they're changing them they can't be out fitting boilers!

i agree there crap ..the idea is good quailty , service, is bad

you might find they will be fitting something else soon if magnaclean dont sort the quality out
