mains smoke alarm 3 core and earth help!!

Hey guys,

I'm replacing a smoke alarm that was removed some time ago but not encountered 3 core and earth because I don't touch a graet deal of wiring.

Obviously the smoke alarms are on the lighting circuit but I'm not sure how to proceed because of this third yellow wire. The bare copper wire has no earth sheath on it and the yellow wire has not been stripped back so I am puzzled about which will be the earth and whether the remaining wire is completely redundant?

Any help much appreciated!! Fitting a smoke alarm shouldn't be this difficult, I would have opted for the battery alternative had the wiring not been hanging out the ceiling..

I guess there are other smoke alarms in the building?

If so they will be interlinked and the third wire will be the interlink. If so you should have
Red = live
Blue = neutral
Yellow = interlink

If there's no interlink just use red & blue.

But as there are no standards, there's no absolute guarantee that whoever put the alarm in did it that way, so you should use your multimeter to check.

That's affirmative!! The yellow wire was the interlink connecting to the landing smoke alarm. Presumably there is no earth for this smoke alarm.. There is a heartening glow from the green LED that confims it's operational Thanks for the replies!

Does the interlink actually work in both directions?
