should people be allowed to work for below minimun wage if they want and should the min rate only start at 21 years of age to help our young into work, remember in my day you started on peanuts but you ended up with a life long skill. ONE WEEK YOUR ARE AT SCHOOL £5/10 pocket money, next week you may have a job what are you wort for the first 2 years

I wouldn't want to work for the minimum wage let alone for less than it so I can't see why anyone should want to work for less
The minimum wage is staggered anyway dependant on age and I think that's correct, if 16-17olds worked for less they may as well be paying the employer as it's only something under £4 an hour as it is. After all are teenagers charged less for the things they use? Does it cost more for a 21 year old to travel on a bus than it does for a 16 year old?

no but I've got a six year old in training.

After farting and faffing about in college my eldest daughter found a job she turned 21 back in march and is entitled to the full minimum wage which she receives,presumably she is classed as not mature enough until she is 21 to earn a minimum but is mature enough at 18 to vote for those that think she should wait until 21 to receive the full wage.

Surely if one wishes to earn more per hour than min wage it should work as an incentive to get off ones backside and put some effort in to bettering oneself and earning more?

Remove the minimum wage and lots of company bosses will look at reducing their staff wages to bring down their overheads, whilst giving themselves a healthy bonus for doing such a good job of improving profit.

How would that work, surely to employ someone on a minimum wage means their overheads are at a minimum,if they didn't want them they would not be employed in the first place.

I don't know the details myself either but they are certainly charged the same levels of vat and other indirect taxes

Probably why the VAT is up @20% to cover what is lost on the lower paid.

Income tax threshold is currently just under £7500, which is more or less £150 per week.

The threshold for starting to have to pay national insurance is about £140 per week.

An under 18 on national minimum of £3.68 per hour is not going to pay ANY income tax, and less than a quid a week in national insurance, on a 40 hour week.

An over 18 but under 21 will be getting £4.98 per hour - so about £12.50 a week income tax and £6 a week national insurance on a 40 hour week. Just over £180 a week take home.

Not too bad if they're still living at home and chucking the parents a couple of tenners a week for food and board.

Absolutely. If somebody feels he can offer only, say, £3 per hour for a particular job and somebody else is willing to work for that amount, then it's none of the government's business. It's entirely a private matter between the two parties involved.
