Anyone else had a mortgage they didn't notice they had paid off 4 years ago? Not an MP then.

Wish i had £14k in the bank to pay off these little expenses that fall due, like your claim for a mortgage that doesn't exist, but then i'm not an m.p. Have to pay my way from whats left of my income after the tax has been at it.

Bit of a bugger the swimming pool boiler being on the blink again, who shall pay? submit a claim.

I doubt it.

If I forgot that my road tax had run out, I would still get fined for not having it - absentmindness is not an excuse

if your honest most people would claim these expenses if in a postion to do so, most people have their own perks at work whether they care to admit it or not

The difference is that those perks are not funded by every taxpayer in the country.

to be honest, I agree with NS215 in part, in tat the majority of people will use a system to their own benefit

however, there is a limit to which is reasonable (i don't see any issue in one of them putting through the odd claim for a couple of hundred that might not be completely legit) but claming 800 quid a month over 18 months for a mortgage you have paid off is fraud and the MP should be charged as such

Ah ha ! if caught by a speed cam at 35 in a 30 - no previous or since - no accidents etc - "Can I go back and drive through at 23 giving average of 29??"

and you will find crystal clear text that points out that quite a few have crossed the line beyond any doubt.

The main part is in "the green book", that you can download from there, and it is in surprisingly simple English.

I have highlighted a few bits from it in a thread on here and there is not doubt whatsoever that they have made claims that were not justified when you read it.

There are few people in society that would not have done what the politicians have done. The rules are soft, manipulative and there to be exploited. Greed is there for all of us to fall victim too. It takes a special personalty to not fall foul of greed.

Be that as it may, it is about time that it is publicly exposed with undeniable proof.

Especially people like the justice minister should be beyond reproach.
He should be sacked, not suspended on full pay, and subjected to a criminal investigation.

The system was designed to be abused and they were actively encouraged to abuse it both by their peers and the fees office.

No doubt not one single MP will be prosecuted even if a blatant fraud has been proven to have been committed. The Met will be encouraged to sit on it and wait till the fuss dies down before gently closing the file.

Of course the other potential is that the hunter -BBC- will become the hunted as we all await the next stage on from the MP's

Not realising you have paid off your mortgage for a year and a half ago, is not fraud, it is a mistake. I mean: who really cares about paying the mortgage? I never realised I finished paying.

The main problem will be to prove intention, you can always deny doing it on purpose.

There will also be plenty of people that will deny that labour mp's abuse the system more than any other party.

Are you telling me that you a) never check your bank account ever ever ever, b) would not be aware, within a month or two, of the end of your liability to the lender c) would not be just a tiny bit confused when the print out at the hole in the wall suggested the presence of somewhat more money within your account than you would expect?

Being savvy enough to get the mortgage paid off and not having a handle on the bank account balances suggests rather an oil and water mix approach to finances.
