I reckon the time has come to replace the old Renault Clio. I'm thinking of getting a Mondeo ST220, anyone got any thought's / experiences of these. Could anyone suggest possible suitable alternatives?

My dad has an ST220, it is phenomenal. Economy can't be too bad, he does a lot of miles in it. The official Ford figure is something like 6.8s for 0-62, but I have read a couple of motoring magazines have had it on the strip and reckon it is actually somewhere in the low-sixes. Which is about right for a car of that weight with 220bhp I would think. Seems daft that the manufacturer would quote a lesser figure, but I'm just regurgitating what I have read.
Like any car with similar performance figures, it goes through front tyres quicker than a Renault Clio would (unless that is a Clio 182!), also being 18" they are a tad more expensive than the 16s or 17s on a lesser Mondeo. Fuel economy isn't as bad as you might think though.
It's only real detriment, as I see it, is that there is no cruise control, nor is there an option for it (unless this is a new addition).
It has a nice burbly idle note too. One of the sexier sounding V6s on the market.

I have always bought Japanese cars since my unfortunate experiences with a Ford Escort and Vauxhall. 
Probably had Jap cars for the last 16 yrs and wouldn't buy anything else.
I find you just put the petrol in and off you go.
Reliability is superb and you don't have to put your hand in your pocket for repairs unlike the Escort which cost me a few quid
Honda and Nissan are extremely reliable and well made, and I have always been very satisfied. My present Honda Civic is superb and worth you checking them out.

Well I've got a Jap "car" as well, my wife puts petrol in it as also, but that makes it stop and costs around £150 per time to clean it out
No the old Clio is a 1.2 putt putt, but frankly I'm getting well peeved with it. Now that I'm old and responsible insurance prem's matter little to me, the Mondeo's look good to me due to their appalling depreciation. Just a bit concerned as to whether they are any good mechanically.BTW, Renault Clio's are c**p as far as I'm concerned, may be a long time before another french car. Mind you little reticent about a ford, as my last one was what I think they call a right minger.

I'm also a fan of Jap cars, only ever had 1 prob with my Civic VT, Got a Scooby Impreza now and wouldn't have any thing else, my father is on his 2nd Legacy.
They are doing thethe WRX at the moment with 3yrs servicing and a free Prodrive Performance pack that gives you 260+BHP and you get AWD so you can use all the power and not spin it away, Bit thirsty though I only get about 21mpg on super unleaded less if I push it.

Bit flashy for my taste, good, undoublty, but not my thing I think, don't really want to go down the large spoiler route. Jap cars, yes, the old Toyota is bullet proof mechanically, maybe a lexus then ? decisions decisions.
It's only the STI version that has the big spoiler, The legacy 2.5i go well and have even smaller spoilers and no bonet scoops

Ta, worth a look no doubt.
One more for you to consider..............Toyota.
I had a Starlet from new 1997 and it never let me down once. The only money I had to spend on it in seven and a half yrs was tyres and servicing.

I know, Mondeo man, not a pleasant thought. So, maybe an Audi, or....... do I qualify for a middle age crisis and buy (on a remortgage) a porsche or ferrari ?
