new build wiring diy or go for spark

having only just started researching what i need to do i was under the impression that if i go the building control route i wont be filing out the completion certificate as the building control use an inhouse or hired electrician to do the testing needed to fill out the certificate.

my thinking was to pay some one to do the testing before i had BC come out to do their test.

unfortunately when i got the first quote i hadn't arranged the sparkys visit the bricklayer had asked him to come round and hadn't told me so i was art a complete loss of trying to explain what i wanted .

If your house takes longer to build, it will cost more.
yes its def going to take longer if i attempt it myself but as i am also going to be most of the other trades (not all plumbing as i i need a hetas plumber due to solid fuel)
but if the house takes longer it doesn't cost me any extra just delays the completion date .
and as i'm limited buy what i can afford its preferable to take longer and actually spend less.

If you're building a house you should have budgeted for the electrical installation.

You would be sensible to get an electrician who will install what you need and give you a certificate. Your best option is to find one who is willing for you to do some of the donkey work, under strict supervision. Finding one who is willing for you to assist, and is prepared for any balls ups you may make may or may not be a problem.

It is important you don't skimp with the electrics on this job, not fitting things you may require later is false economy. Adding things later can be awkward.

You would be better off paying for a decent electrical installation first, and postpone other jobs like fancy fittings and floor coverings until you can afford it.

its not rude at all as your right i dont know how to do it :)
and yes the saying jack of all trades does sping to mind.
at the moment i think with enough research i will be able to install the wiring circuits and then get them tested however that doesnt mean once i've i started im going to feel the same.

Q1. Whereabouts in Norfolk.
Only asking as I have done work with customer who want to save money. I attend every day as I would for a full rewire and use the owner as the labourer. They run cables in etc only when I am on site and do nothing when I am not there. If I see extra work, then I will spend their money to check it is all to my satisfaction, so no point doing it unless told too. Customer doesn't want to waste money so only makes that mistake once.
Send me contact details and we can have a chat.

Delays always cost more money. Doesn't matter who is doing the work or how it's being paid for.
I get the impression he's taking the attitude that his time doesn't cost anything. That's rarely true, and would only apply if he was not taking time out from paid employment of any kind while doing this. Even if unemployed, I suspect that the fact one is building a house would be taken as meaning he's not looking for work and so he would not qualify for unemployment benefit (or whatever it's called this week). So even that's a cost.

On the other hand, for many people delays can be very beneficial to the cash flow situation. If you are funding the work from regular income plus borrowing then delays mean more from your income and less from borrowing.

well on this build delays dont cost anymore as i work three days fri-sun and do build on the other four . true technically if i charged myself for my time or if i used my time to work more days and earn money it does cost more ., but im enjoyeing the build and believe in the moto work to live not live to work:)

JACKC im on the border of norfolk cambridgeshire between March and Littleport

thanks again for all the advice its greatly appreciated
