Hi

I read somewhere that all original roofs on Victorian houses were slate, does anyone know if this is true? My current one has clay tile (Rosemary I've been told) and I'm sure the roof had to have been replaced at least once in its life. I am thinking of replacing it again.

I'm very conscious of the weight, my previous 1940's semi had concrete tiles installed and the roof bowed. It was subsequently supported but the survey did not pick it up at the time of my purchase. When I sold it the purchaser's did.

Thanks

No, not all roofs were slate in the 19th Century (although it was a common choice of material). My parents' house is late 19th Century and has its original 'Belgian' style tiles which I have seen in a photograph taken in 1910. Unsure of the material. I've seen a good amount of clay tiles used in 19th Century commercial property too, where they seem to have mixed different colours of clay.

My 1940s house has concrete tiles, but they seem to be light. They are original to the house.
