Or am i soley to blame?

Any advice would be appreciated. If you were on a job and found out that some of it was not necessary would you tell the customer.

:o
Edited because.

From what I recall
Halfway through the rewire he looked in the loft and see new grey cable, installed next to the old grey cable and also the old conduit was being reused,

Also the old cable when it was exposed in the kitchen was dated 2004.

I think he felt cheated
So we tried to explain reasons why it may have needed doing

The last bit he later added to sound like a different question

you can't blame the sparky you commisioned to do the job.. he had a brief from you the client that you wanted a rewire.. it's not his job to tell you what you want..

if you must blame someone, then blame the cowboy who started it all with telling you that you needed a new CU and a rewire, that his mate had time to do...

I don't think that proteus has been around all that long ( I don't recall having heard of them 10 years ago.. ) so the CU might not have been that old

Proteus was around in the BS3871 era, so could quite feasibly be 15 to 20 years old.

Try getting an RCBO for that.

I have rewired plenty of houses wired in grey T&E. Some of them desperatly needed doing due to no earths and metal fittings, and some are done because it ends up being less work due to lots of alterations / repairs being required.

thanks for the response.

Possibly what led the first spark to condemn the wiring was a total lack of pipe bonding.
I actually think it is possible that the vendor pulled out the bonding clips and wire as I would hope the survey would have picked up this.

The proteus was knackered, the rcd switch would not trip.

Also if some work was done in 2004 should the spark that did the work picked up on the lack of bonding?

Could be a mix and match of various ages.
Could be fairly recent but of very poor quality.
Possible mechanical damage.
Or any of another dozen reasons.
Wiring can be 5 years old and dire or 15 and perfect.

Is the first part of this thread missing?
I can`t make sense of it from purely what I see

he's edited out the fact that the guy who came to fit a light told him he needed a new CU and a rewire.. all from a quick glance at the CU.., and that he had a friend that could do the work..
said friend then turned up and changed the CU and quoted for the rewire..

they chose not to take that quote and got another registered sparky in and told him to re-wire it..

now he's upset that the third sparky is doing as told and re-wiring it even though parts of the installation might be useable..

is that a reasonable summing up of the original post?

Could this be buyer’s remorse?
Maybe op called 20 sparkies from the yellow stains, got the cheapest and is now upset because another one got back to him and offered to do it for 80 quid less than the other bloke?

Think I have the jist of this. Has the original fella who replaced the CU replaced it with a PROTEUS?

If so can I reccomend to Aysha that she buys some Ice-cream and sprinkles to go with it!!!

There was one in my new gaff when I bought it, wobbled like jelly!!!!

Out it came, gave it to the bloke I bought the house off with a note saying; " The CU is ****e but your electrical skills are 1000 times worse"

He is a mechanic!!!

Moral of this tale is; get a sparky reccomended to you and make sure he's the real deal"

No idea.

But then the whole thread is confusing - why on earth did the OP edit it so much that it is now utterly pointless?

And why on earth should the seller of a house remove the bonding?

And why doesn't someone notify the mods and just get the whole thread removed, so pointless it is?

No idea.

And why on earth should the seller of a house remove the bonding?

OP said some wiring behind sockets was dated 2004 but the pipes had no bonding. So in essence if wiring was done in 2004 why no bonding?

Either a cowboy job or it got taken out later.

That is assuming bonding was necessary in 2004 or before.

I think it is a fair question.
