Not so Bright Future

Also military ships will turn off their AIS when in foreign waters whilst on manouvers or conducting sensitive surveilance etc.. If the crew of the yacht were all below deck the Russian ship would be blind to them, as the Russians tried to make contact on the radio with no response as well as sounding their horn then the only way then to catch their attention was to fire warning shots in order to grab its attention. I dont think it is anymore than that.

The sailing boat disputes that they were hailed on VHF not that it makes much difference. They also claim it was foggy.

Having seen some photos of the boat, you can clearly see the Raymarine radar pod about half way up the mast.

Never paid any attention as not seen the photo myself.

Most people struggle to hold a course to 5 degrees accuracy.
They’ll have been using the auto pilot, so just blipped it a couple of points away from the warship.

Either way, rifle fire is a bit extreme a warning. I think the mod is trying to talk down the message that the Russians were sending after we captured their tanker last week.

Long, long ago. We needed to enlist the services of dozens of countries to help repel the attacks on the UK during WWII.

Yes, but we booted the Argies out long after that. Ronald Reagan wouldn't help, even though he was slipping Maggie one on the sly.

A) We couldn't do that now with Conchie Kier at the helm and our aircraft carriers about as reliable as a used Cortina from Arthur Daley's car lot

B) Starmie would have given the Argies the 'Malvinas' plus a couple of billion £ for their trouble.

maybe.. but 2 degrees is not a clear indication of course change.

There is an analysis of the ground track in YM.

There is no obvious reason for the sailing yacht to breach the exclusion zone.

You're more than 4 decades out of date

Linky Linky

"Margaret Thatcher's government offered to hand over sovereignty of the Falkland islands at a clandestine meeting with a senior Argentinian official less than two years before the invasion of the British territory, it is revealed today.

Colleagues of the British minister involved set up a diversionary cover story to explain his absence, saying he was off to Switzerland to do a little painting with his wife.

The secret meeting is disclosed in the official history of the Falklands by Sir Lawrence Freedman, professor of war studies at King's College, University of London.

He reveals that in June 1980, the Foreign Office drew up a proposal, approved by the cabinet's defence committee, whereby Britain would hand Argentina titular sovereignty over the islands, which would then be leased back by Britain for 99 years"

From what i've read, the skipper and crew were playing the 'steam gives way to sail' card and expected the Russian warship to change course.
