Hi guys, just a quickie has the regs changed with regards to number of sockets on a ring, my question is, is it still calculated by floor area or is there a fixed number ie 14etc.
Lee
Max floor area 100m² , no restriction on number of outlets, but you should make a judgement on how much load is likely to be drawn, a kitchen for example will pull a higher load than a dining room, for example
Thanx for that Adam, thats what i thought, reason for asking was that i'd been saked to quote on a job which involved adding some sockets onto an existing ring for a conservatory, the customer had had someone else in who basically said nothing could be added as there were 14 sockets already on the ring not including kitchen. So just for my own piece of mind i was making sure it was floor area that dictated the quantity.
Yes it`s the flooor area but you gotta make a judgement call too.
When this floor area was first decreed there were not as many appliances in common use.
For instance, dishwashers )our is called EBEE LOL)
Kitchens nowsadays own ring final (or perhaps the odd bedroom too) irrespective of floor area.
Think about likely use (and future use).
14 or 114 or 7 is not a number to deal with, it`s likely use therefore total current consumption that is the deciding issue
Or - to put it another way - If your household has say 20 sockets and the increases it to 100 sockets you have increased the total possible current draw by 5 times but is the likely current draw increased at all?
Probably not but the locations might vary
