I very rarely call someone stupid on that forum (I can only think of one person who I might have done). Incompetent? Indeed, if I think they are, and I've agreed I may sometimes err on the side of caution, because the penalty for incompetence with electrical work can be death. Fair enough, and AFAIK you know your stuff and never give out wrong advice, but sometimes you have to be careful especially with new contributors that don't know you or your style. You don't want them to kill themselves, and that may well be your only goal, but sometimes it can come across as sarcastic or smart-arsed and that probably causes them to shut that advice out of their head, rather than heed it.

So how do I make the point that people who want to maim, torture and kill are vile and despicable barbarians?

OK - That's a bit trickier. Hard is it may seem, sometimes you need to accept that a thread just isn't going anywhere and you are never going to talk people round. Best thing is to just say your piece, let it go, and then in 6 or so hours there will have been endless new threads on why orange smarties are the only ones with a flavour, or how dark it was this morning, and the offending thread will have dropped down to page 2 and out of people's minds.

Bas I agree with you fully on capital punishment but I think that calling people who oppose your view 'vile hideous barbarians' (or whatever it was)is an unproductive way to conduct any kind of an argument, even though that is what you think. If you are trying to change other peoples' viewpoints then bombarding them with what they percieve to be insults is not going to encourage them to listen to what you have to say.

As far as the JulieL thing, I seem to recall that a few months ago she stopped sharing a username with Dave because she wanted us to realise that she did not necessarily share his viewpoints. If he chose to keep the old D&J username it's hardly her fault is it?

More to the point, what's in a handle anyway. It's just an identifier on a forum and shouldn't be taken to reflect anything in the 'real' world. If someone chooses one that another finds inappropriate, then as long as it's not offensive in any way, tough ****.

This is the bit I was trying to say last time but somehow doesn't seem to get the message across. I can understand if BAS is angry about death penatly but never gave me another chance to think about it the way he put it across to me.

You should learn to count better, and get things in perspective.

33 of them (i.e. just under 16%) were mine.

Of those, 2 were about "the Julie issue", and 2 touched on it in passing - hardly a rant at all, let alone a large one.

Saying that though none of you know anything about each other(I don't think) as individuals yet you choose to to make ongoing abusive posts at each other just because you dislike or object to an opinion or statement. It does seem to be a bit extreme

I understand what you're saying, but the people I sounded off against want capital and corporal punishment not out of some reasoned analysis of its effectiveness, but because they want retribution. They do not see that state-sanctioned violence as a way of maintaining order in society fatally weakens the moral authority of that society, and they are not going to change their minds because of reasoned debate.

You've seen the stuff that Slogger posts - do you really think that anybody could find a way to persuade him that he was mistaken?

And as I said before - I want the Sloggers of this world to know how vile I think they are.

All I know is that if I were in her position, and my partner was saying things under my name that I did not like or agree with or wish to be associated with, I'd make damned sure he stopped.
