Our political system, what 'is' the answer?

Abolish the lords.

Give every MP say £200k per year that they can't have themselves but can donate to whatever party they belong to. Then ban all parties from receiving any funding from any other source - no business donations, billionaires or unions.
That's actually a good idea.
The state should be funding all political parties.
Private funding should be illegal.
In the old days all political activities were privately funded, MPs had to either be rich or be funded by a rich patron.
The above resulted in massive corruption by the rich and other vested interests.

If we abolish the HoL then the monarchy is surely in the line of fire - will Ulster Unionists go along with that?

Nonsense! The destruction of Britain hasn't occurred naturally; it is a result of deliberate actions by a succession of people, starting with Tony Blair. It can therefore be deliberately undone by other people.
National decline isn't confined to Britain.
It's a white Western European phenomenon.
Decolonisation by the West has allowed the freedom of movement for millions of former subjects of the Empires.
With technological advances, you can fly from one side of the world to another within hours, you only need a smart phone to see how the rest of the world live.
People from outside see how people in theWest live and they want part of that life.

You're the one silencing debate.

This is the way you operate:

You write something wrong.
I produce facts and evidence showing you are wrong.
You decide that debate consists of dismissing the facts and evidence which are inconvenient to you as nonsense.

Or

You write something wrong.
I invite you to produce facts and evidence which show you are not wrong.
You decide that debate consists of refusing to do that.

I see what you mean...

It seems you need to be reminded of this.
Crikey, you really like your multi-quoting like you're the top barrister in some quiet corner of some website.

Not really sure what you're trying to prove or disprove, but errr well done or something?

I fail to see any link between the royals and ireland.

The UK would still be a country if it became a republic, and NI would remain part of it.

Whether NI should remain part of it is another question, but it's not related to whether we have a king or not.

So now anybody concerned for truth and facts is "pompous".

You really, really don't like truth and facts, do you.
