The difference being that every engine has a peak power performance in each gear, and with a manual you can choose the exact gear for the speed/revs at that moment and have the maximum power available and ready. The auto will do the same, but has a delay of a small amount or a noticeable amount, like changing gear takes. In performance engine terms, it's about keeping it "on the cam".
The argument is whether you want that control or let the auto do it for you.
I've nearly always had manuals, for my petrol head needs, but am now moving over to autos, but mainly because most of my driving is in traffic. The auto wins hands down in traffic.
And then there's EV's and anybody who has driven them can tell the difference. There is no lag, momentary or otherwise.
But there's still good reason for all choices
