Hmmmm, beer festivals. OK if that's your thing. What I mean by real ales are the hand-pulled beers that I grew up with, and which were everywhere in Manchester and thereabouts: Boddies, Holts's, Hyde's, Robinson's, Thwaites, JW Lees, Tetley's, Wilson's, Sam Smith's. These beers, when on form, were like heaven. Each one had its fans and its haters. That world has almost disappeared, although some of the beers live on in name only. The head on the beer is part of the drink, I know there are people at beer festivals who tell you to drink it headless - that's just wrong to me, but It's all personal choice. The modern idea of Real Ale is often something cloudy that tastes of grapefruit, raspberry or liquorice.... anything but beer.
I bet you never buy your round. There'll always be an excuse.
Years ago there was a legendary character at the local WMC who used to clean the place in the mornings in exchange for drinking all the slops. Dead now of course.
